Warranty vs Customer Pay for Automotive Technicians

Learn how LaborLens distinguishes Warranty and Customer Pay operation lines, including service and brake work, and how to compare hours and earnings.

The two primary repair-work types

Warranty work is paid under the manufacturer or warranty program. Customer Pay work is paid by the customer or another non-warranty payment path. LaborLens keeps these repair categories separate so technicians can compare tickets, hours and earnings rather than relying only on a combined paycheck total.

How LaborLens classifies supported reports

For the compensation-report format currently supported by LaborLens, an Operation Code containing exactly six digits is treated as Warranty. Short alphanumeric codes—such as service or brake codes—and other non-six-digit codes are treated as Customer Pay.

Dealer and manufacturer systems can use different conventions. The original report remains authoritative, and a technician should verify any code that does not match the expected payment type.

Service and brake work stay inside Customer Pay

Service and brake work are useful details, not separate primary pay types. When a service or brake operation is Customer Pay, LaborLens includes its hours and earnings in the Customer Pay total while still labeling the work detail for analysis.

This makes it possible to answer both questions: how much Customer Pay work was completed, and how much of that work came from oil and fuel service, maintenance, brakes or other positions.

Compare hours, tickets and earnings together

More Customer Pay dollars do not automatically mean more Customer Pay tickets. One high-hour operation may earn more than several short services. Compare at least four values: ticket count, operation-line count, compensated hours and earnings.

  • Ticket count shows how many repair orders included the pay type
  • Line count shows how many classified operations appeared
  • Hours show compensated production
  • Earnings show the dollar contribution at the report's pay rate

Do not put Training or PTO into Customer Pay

Training Pay and PTO/Holiday are compensated categories, but they are not customer repair operations. LaborLens displays them separately in the work and income breakdown so the Warranty-to-Customer-Pay ratio reflects actual repair work.
